Howard’s Replacement to be Named Soon

The controversy surrounding the nomination of John Howard to the post of ICC vice-president refuses to die down.
After six of the 10 full ICC members rejected Howard’s nomination to the post it is now time for Cricket Australia and the New Zealand board to announce a replacement for Howard.
On Friday the Australian Cricket Board is meeting and is expected to come up with a name. But the final announcement is still some way away because the decision can only be made in consultation with the New Zealand cricket board and they are not slated to meet for the next two weeks. August 31 is the last date for the two countries to name a joint representative for the post of ICC vice-president. That person will automatically be promoted to the post of President in 2012 when the next elections take place.
According to the CA, John Howard was still the candidate who could be nominated. He also said that the cricket boards of Australia and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 needed to decide whether or not he needs to be supported.
The New Zealand Cricket board is slated to meet on 23rd July. It will be interesting to see what transpires at this meeting since the first choice of the New Zealand board was their former chairman Sir http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Anderson-c67288 but finally his name was voted down under pressure from the CA.
The contenders for the post now include Clarke, an Adelaide solicitor. But he is not too keen on the post since he feels he does not have enough time to devote to both his jobs.
Other people in contention are former Australian captain Mark http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-South-Wales-c823 since 1990 and also has significant experience.
The post has got a lot of people talking about it and has got involved in a lot of controversies. But the general opinion is that the position does not hold that much charm anymore.
The whole issue blew out of promotion when the ICC rejected Howard’s name in its meeting in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 came out in support of Howard.
After the ICC’s decision the entire Australian media and board went full out to attack the opposing boards especially the BCCI. Former ICC CEO Malcolm Speed felt that even Pawar was not fit since he would have a conflict of interest since he is already the agriculture minister of India. The Australian media made a big issue out of the entire thing and a bad name for India was being splashed all over.
In fact now there are calls from some former Australian players to give up the chance to get representation to the post and pass it on to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747. They have gone even further to say that after that the Australian board should not even vote in the elections.
The matters could soon get interesting!
