So when sunlight passes through rain drops during a rain,the rain drops act like tiny prisms and help in scattering light into 7 colors.This is displayed as a colorful rainbow which takes place opposite to the sunlight

A colourful rainbow is formed by the internal reflection in a raindrop.There are three main steps:

1. The light enters the raindrop and gets refracted.

2. The light gets reflected internally by the inner surface of the rain drop.

3. The light exits the rain drop again getting refracted.

Sometimes 2 internal refractions takes place if the light hits the rain drop at a specific angle.
