Hp pavilion graphics low... what to do?

I have a problem with the graphics on my laptop, an hp pavilion dv 7 runing on windows vista 64 bit, and with a nvidia 9600M gt video card, although the display setting tells me that it has 32 bits, the resolution is just not right enough... like, gradients don't look like gradients but like lines of colors and other stuff, pictures have really bright spots... has anyone had this problem before?
