  1. If you are going to teach yourself (bravo! thats the best way!) there are plenty of online resources to aid you.

To build a site I would suggest at a very minimum learning HTML and CSS.  CSS will help the overall layout and design of your site and you can then just use the HTML for the content.  They go hand in hand and as far as languages go, they are the 2 easiest to learn.  I will add some helpful links for you here:

    CSS Links:

http://www.w3.org/Style/CSS/   W3 CSS tutorial, pretty straight forward and basic.

    http://www.html.net/tutorials/css/introd...

    http://www.learn-css-tutorial.com/

    HTML:

    http://www.w3schools.com/html/DEFAULT.as...  great try-it-yourself applications here

http://www.goodellgroup.com/tutorial/  - kind of cheesy but some good basics here

    http://www.davesite.com/webstation/html/

    http://www.utexas.edu/learn/html/

    http://webdesign.about.com/od/beginningt... About.com's resources -  nice

    Extra's:

http://www.webmonkey.com/  Web Monkey... includes tutorials, cheat sheets etc.  Great resource

http://dynamicdrive.com  the forum here is full of great people that will help with ANY question you can come up with.

    Have fun!

  2. For a beginner's tutorial on HTML, go here: http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.as... . This is my favorite because it has so many examples to choose from. If you need another tutorial, try http://www.tizag.com .

After you learn some HTML, you'll want to learn how to make your site look better and more unique. The answer is CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). This design language adds some style to your page by making changes to links, text, etc. Here is a tutorial on CSS: http://www.w3schools.com/css/

When you have a more advanced site, JavaScript will come in handy. It gives your site more pizazz by controlling every HTML element. Here is a tutorial on JavaScript: http://www.w3schools.com/js/default.asp

These are the most basic things you need to know to make a site. Later you should learn server-side languages -- mainly PHP.

Good luck with learning it all : )
