Hu Yadan wins Women’s 10m Platform semi-final: Day five – 2011 World Diving Championships
The 15-year-old Chinese diver, Hu Yadan, won the hearts of arena by winning the semi-final of the Women’s 10m Platform diving meet on day five of the 2011 Shanghai World Championships on Wednesday, July 20.
Yadan occupied the top qualification spot in the preliminary rounds, by achieving a score of 382.25 points. In the semi-finals, she improved her score by almost 21 points to become the favourite contender for the gold medal. She won the top spot of the discipline,
by accomplishing a total of 403.65 points in the finals. With her undisputed effort, China is now one step closer to collect a sixth gold medal in the ongoing World Championships.
In addition, the dominance of Chinese divers was not restricted to first position only, as Ruolin Chen claimed the second qualification spot behind Yadan, by gaining 385.95 points. The third position was secured by Paola Espinosa of Mexico, who stayed almost
nineteen points behind Chen, with a score of 366.65 points. Espinosa earned the fifth best qualification spot in the preliminary rounds but with her impressive attempt, she overwhelmed the efforts of Canadian and Malaysian divers, who qualified as third and
fourth finest divers into the semi-finals.
In addition, Pandelela Rinong of Malaysia was the fourth best qualifier of the event, as she earned a score of 348.70 points. She stayed only seventeen points away from her closest competitor, Nora Subschinski of Germany, who achieved a score of 331.70 points.
Alexandra Croak of Australia followed her on the overall points table, by obtaining the sixth finest score of 330.35 points.
Meaghan Benfeito of Canada was the seventh position holder of the event, as she managed a score of 327.70 points in the semi-finals. She was followed by Benfeito’s team-member, Roseline Filion, who was ranked eighth in the overall rankings, with a score
of 326.15 points.
Furthermore, the session concluded after another dominating effort of Chinese divers, while these qualifiers will face each other once again in the final of Women’s 10m Platform discipline.
