Hu Yun proves his worth against Du Pengyu in Men’s Singles event – Hong Kong Open Update
Hong Kong’s budding shuttler Hu Yun alarmed all the contestants of Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open by thrashing Men’s Singles maestro Du Pengyu in the opening round on November 21, 2012.
This epic tussle remained in full swing for 50 minutes as both contenders made the crowd gasp with their amazing show of badminton skills while piling up final figures of 21-17 and 22-20.
World Number six Du Pengyu, who was one of the frontrunners in this Super Series, failed to live up to his billing and crashed out in a woeful manner.
Meanwhile, the lower ranked but talented Hu Yun’s play was a real feast for the eyes as he outclassed his superior rival in all areas of the game.
In the beginning of the first set, the Chinese campaigner ruled the court in the establishing rallies and gained an early advantage.
Du Pengyu relished full benefits of this initial lead and strengthened his grip by registering 5-1 total.
He did not lose focus and kept gathering valuable points at steady pace all the way to mid-game break. He finished first half of the set with a respectable score position of 11.
However, later part of the game changed the whole scenario as Hu Yun stormed back with a strong reply and turned the tables.
The Hong Kong’s talented campaigner caught his challenger at 13-13 and then tipped the scale in his favour with a staggering knock of 21-17.
This first set win provided Hu Yun the required momentum and he cruised to victory also in the following game.
Though, the opposing shuttler showed great fighting spirit but he could not avoid a straight-set defeat.
On the other hand, Hu Yun qualified for the pre quarter-finals despite of putting a fluctuated performance.
He remained at the lower end until 4-6 but couple of back-to-back productive rallies helped him to finish first half with a decent total of 10-11.
After the one-minute break, the game kept swinging between both contenders as neither of them could make a notable difference until the last shot was played.
Finally, this nerve-racking tussle ended when Hu Yun placed a winning margin of 22-20 and setup a second round clash with Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif.
