1. The HST was used as part of the 1998 announcement of Dark Energy.  The measurement of the Hubble constant was one of the primary missions for the instrument.

The fine guidance sensors were used to measure the side to side (proper motion) movement of a brown dwarf star under the influence of a relatively large close-in planet.  This is a feat that can't currently be accomplished any other way.

2. Failures: The primary mirror was ground improperly, and flown despite ground testing that showed it was wrong.  The servicing mission rescued the effort, but it has been an ongoing concern ever since.
