Huber/Raymond conquer Mirza/Vesnina to claim the title – BNP Paribas Open 2012
In a clash between top two seeds, Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond topple the Indo-Russian tandem, Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina, in straight sets at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Saturday
night. The American duo jolted down a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the second seeds to shelve their fourth year-to-date title at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event held in Indian Wells, United States.
After conquering Paris, Doha and Dubai WTA Premier-level titles in February, the top seeded junction carried their momentum at this event and dumped Mirza-Vesnina in 64 minutes. They broke
the lower ranked team’s serve four times to not only extend their winning streak to 16 matches in a row but also bagged their eighth WTA title together.
"Right now we're just playing well," Raymond was quoted in a post-match press conference. "When we step on the court we feel the other team is going to have to play really well to
beat us, whether or not there are tough conditions. We've proven that over the past few weeks. And even anyone ever thinks we're down and out, we'll find a way to win."
"Our run has been unbelievable - we've come close to losing at times, but we've worked very hard, and the hard work has been showing in our great results,” Huber added.
Huber and Raymond high-spiritedly entered the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and after brushing off all seven breakpoints they came across, the Americans swiped in their entire serves. They
cashed in half of the four break opportunities and clinched the opener with a 6-2 score line.
The reigning US Open champions kept momentum rolling into the proceeding set. They lost their serves once but converted two out of four break chances to their advantage, ultimately sealing
the set by winning six games to three.
All in all, the highest ranked doubles pair of this tournament manifested a slightly lower first serve share of 57 per cent as opposed to their opponents’ 60 per cent but magnificently
clicked 24 out of 32 points on it.
They are now eying to grab their fifth straight title at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
