Question:

Huckleberry vs. Blueberry?

What exactly makes them different? We found some Huckleberries last weekend. The only way we could tell was the type of bush. They looked like blueberries and tasted like it. And in the middle of a wild patch was one bush that from pictures looks like the garden variety of huckleberry.

So I was interested in what makes them different if the berry looks and tastes the same.

  1. I love huckleberries! they grow near my house up in the Mountains of MT. Just watch out for bears!

  2. Huckleberries - although a lot like blueberries - are actually a different bird. Huckleberries grow mainly in the pacific northwest (Seattle) area whereas blueberries are the northeast (Maine) and midcoast (New Jersey) areas. I think Huckleberries are generally smaller and sweeter than blueberries even though they are quite similar. This is my experience, anyway, for what it's worth.
