Hudson Swafford wins the Nationwide Tour’s Stadion Classic – Golf News
Hudson Swafford fired a nine-under par 62 in the final round of the Stadion Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Club to record the first ever victory of his career on the Nationwide Tour on Sunday, May 6, 2012.
“This is unbelievable. My first win is huge and to be in Athens, words don’t describe it,” said Swafford, who follows in the footsteps of former teammate Rusell Henley, who won here last year as an amateur. “I couldn’t have drawn it up any better. The way
it happened is a dream come true”.
Swafford’s start was not impressive, as he carded a bogey on the very first hole he played. However, he bounced back strongly with a birdie on the very next hole.
It seemed as if he started to work on some sequence of birdie-making. He carded three consecutive birdies starting from the fifth hole.
Afterwards, he managed to make three par shots followed by another run of three birdies from the 11th hole.
He completed his round in the similar fashion and went further three down with the help of three back-to-back birdies that were enough to take one-stroke victory over Luke List and Lee Janzen.
When he signed off his scorecard, his rivals were still on the course completing their rounds. Therefore, he had to wait for around 90 minutes prior to his announcement as a winner.
“I did what I could,” said Swafford after he signed his card. “We’ll see if it’s good enough”.
Many players had the chance of matching his score in the end but all failed allowing him to earn a cheque of $99,000, which took him to the seventh spot on the Nationwide Tour money list.
“This is just a starting point. This is no time to get comfortable,” he said. “I’m still a long way from where I need to be. I’m another win away from getting anything done”.
Billy Horschel took the fourth spot after carding a three-under par 68 on Sunday. Tyrone Van Aswegen, the overnight leader, failed to impress his fans and carded a one-under par score to slip to the fifth place on the leaderboard.
