Huey/Inglot edge Anderson/Querrey to claim doubles title – Citi Open 2012
Filipino-British pair of Treat Conrad Huey and Dominic Inglot grabbed first tour-level title of their career by overcoming South African-American tandem of Kevin Anderson and Sam Querrey 7-6(7), 6-7(9), 10-5 in the Citi Open final
in Washington DC, USA, on Sunday.
Huey/Inglot and Anderson/Querrey started the contest by holding their serve in the opening two games of the match to square off the score at 1-1. The Filipino-British duo struck in the third and consolidated on it to attain a 3-1
lead. However, the South African-American combination broke back in the 10th game to even out the proceedings at 5-5. Both teams held their following serve to take the score to 6-6 and force a tie-breaker.
Ranked 19th in the world, Huey and Inglot neither hit any ace nor committed any double fault, maintaining their first serve percentage at 57 in the first set. The Filipino-British pair had a decent conversion rate, securing
16 of the 23 first and 14 of the 17 second delivery points. Huey and Inglot saved three of the four break points they faced and converted one of the two they received.
In the second set, none of the two teams managed to claim breakthrough till the end, levelling the score at 6-6 and taking it to a tie-breaker. Huey/Inglot and Anderson/Querrey went neck to neck in the first 18 points to equalise
the proceedings at 9-9. At that moment, the South African-American tandem pocketed two back to back, sealing it 11-9.
Both combinations went at par till 3-3 in the match tie-breaker but then Huey and Inglot took control of the contest, as they claimed seven of the subsequent nine points to win 10-5.
Huey and Inglot clinched victory after a close battle of one hour and 55 minutes.
Inglot said, “I feel really happy. We played a high level of tennis. They played a really good level as well. It’s good to know that we’re able to compete with these kinds of guys and we kept on in the final as well, and I’m really
happy we’re able to win our first tournament in Washington.”
Huey added, “It’s a great experience to come here and play the tournament. I grew up watching this as a little kid. Dom and I had a fun week. It’s always more fun when you win so that definitely helps.”
Inglot and Huey had lost to Querrey and James Blake in the US Men’s Clay Court Championship final earlier in this year.
