Huey/Lipsky defeat Kohlman/Mayer to reach the title match – Gerry Weber Open 2012
Filipino-American duo of Treat Conrad Huey and Scott Lipsky defeated Michael Kohlman and Florian Mayer of Germany in straight sets 7-6(2), 6-4 in the semi-finals at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle on Saturday. Huey and Lipsky required
only an hour and five minutes to thrash their opponents and reach the final.
In the first set, Huey/Lipsky and Kohlman/Mayer held their serve in the first three games and equalised the score at 3-3. The German tandem snatched a break in the seventh and consolidated on it to go up 5-3. Serving for the set
at 5-4, Kohlman and Mayer could not finish it off, dropping their serve to level the proceedings at 5-5. Both teams held their serve in the following two, taking the score to 6-6 and forcing a tie-breaker. Huey and Lipsky raced to a 4-0 lead capitalised on
it to triumph 7-6(2).
The Filipino-American combination fired four aces and 70 percent of the first deliveries, sealing 18 of the 23 points on them. They also performed exceptionally well on the second ones, securing seven of the 10. Huey and Lipsky
failed to save the only break threat they came across but balanced that by utilising the one opportunity they got in the opener.
In the second set, both pairs started by winning their opening serves and squaring off the score at 1-1. Huey and Lipsky grabbed a breakthrough in the third and held their subsequent serve to build a 3-1 advantage. They did not
allow Kohlman and Mayer to stage a comeback till the end of the encounter, closing it 6-4.
The Filipino-American duo bombarded six aces and did not commit any double fault in the second set. They maintained a first serve percentage of 67 and clinched 15 of the 16 points on them. Huey and Lipsky performed averagely on
the second deliveries and returns, as they pocketed just five of the eight and three of the nine points on them respectively. The Filipino-American tandem did not provide any break chance to the Germans.
Huey and Lipsky will take on Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer or Lukasz Kubot and Mikhail Youzhny in the final.
