Huge blow for Liverpool as Jamie Carragher sidelined for at least 3 months
Liverpool’s 2010-11 Premier League season seems to be going from bad to worse. After losing talismanic captain Steven Gerrard to a hamstring injury playing for England (against France) earlier in the month, they have now lost defender
Jamie Carragher for at least 3 months with a dislocated shoulder. The 32-year-old defender sustained the injury in the defeat to Liverpool at White Hart Lane on Sunday, a game which Liverpool lost 2-1 thanks to an injury-time goal from Aaron Lennon.
The 32-year-old confirmed this after he had a treatment on the Liverpool training ground as the club waited to know the extent of the injury. Liverpool’s worst nightmare was confirmed when the club doctors reported that Jamie (Carragher)
has to go under the knife on Friday and will be missing up to three months on the sidelines.
Carragher has confirmed that it is unlikely that he is going to feature in a Premier League fixture anytime before February and admits that he finds it very frustrating to be sidelined. Carragher said on the club’s official website:
"I'll be having surgery at the end of the week. The average is about 12 weeks. I'd like to come back before that but I've got to make sure it's right. It will probably be late February or early March when I'm looking to come back.
"It's difficult for me when I'm injured. It hasn't happened very often, and I'm very lucky with that I suppose, but maybe it's caught up with me a little bit now. I've been here before with a broken leg which put me out this length
of time. I'm sure towards the end of the season when people are maybe feeling a little bit tired I'll be raring to go."
The injury to Jamie leaves manager Roy Hodgson searching for options as he is already without Daniel Agger. Liverpool currently finds itself in unfamiliar territory as they sit mid table in 10th place with an aggregated 19 points.
They are already 12 points behind provisional league leaders Manchester United and are lagging behind in the race for the fourth spot that would ensure them European football next year. In order to get there, they must first overcome the 7 points gap to Manchester
City and 6 points deficit to Tottenham.
Things are only going to get tougher for Liverpool without their top defender and midfielder. Liverpool have got a few difficult games coming up with the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle and without Carragher now, the Merseyside
club seems destined to sink even lower on the League table. Perhaps we shall soon be seeing the new owners open their cheque books, ready to splash out cash in order to steer the sinking ship to shore.
