Question:

Huge electric bill for apartment?

I live in an apartment and am getting astronomical electric bills. Our A/C went out on us last night and the apt. complex "fixed" it for us but I can tell that it is still not functioning with efficiency. We are not in a top floor and our bill last year (in the same unit) was considerably less. What are some things that I can do to cut down on our electric bill and to make our A/C more efficient?

  1. At my house, we have central a/c, which can get expensive very easily. The a/c and lights are pretty much off during the day, and if anyone is home they open the windows and shades. We close all the windows around sundown, and then turn on the a/c. hope this helped!

  2. No fun!  I would contact your super again and have them FIX the AC for sure.  Then contact your power provider and ask for an energy audit or assessment...  Some power companies will come out and show you where you are losing your "cool" and tell you how to fix it.  Also, some companies will provide financial grants or credit on your power bill if you make the corrections that result in saving power...  Good luck!

  3. Well the A/C adds a LOT more to an electric bill.  Try fans or opening windows and that should considerably decrease the amount of your electric bill.

  4. They did not fic the a/c.  It probably has an air escaping out of it somewhere causing it to run longer than it should.

  5. Electric rates have gone up in the past year, and will continue to climb as people start plugging in electric cars.

So, you can't compare last year's dollars to this year's dollars. You must compare the kilowatts that you used last year, to determine if you are using more electricity, or the same.

  6. Make the windows well-sealed, and use curtains so the sun won't come through. For each degree you go up, that's how much you'll save on the a/c. If you're not in during the day, turn off the a/c. Turn the fan on so the a/c air is circulated throughout the apartment.

  7. Turn it up at night before you go to bed... Don't run the dryer during the day or stove. Use a lower voltage light bulb. Don't use a dishwasher ( it really eats electric). Turn computers off instead of standby. Put an extra seal around your windows of cover them in plastic. (yeah I know tacky but it works) Close the door and vent to rooms that aren;t used much. If no one is at home during the day turn the air up then turn it back down when you get home.
