I have a huge wood dilemma! I somehow need to get pine doors (new unstained), red oak 100 yr old baseboards (refinishing), a staircase made from red oak (old, refinishing) and a brown walnut hardwood floor (new pre-stained) to look good together! No matter what color they are stained the red oak baseboards and staircase take on a reddish color that makes our hardwood floor look greenish! And the new pine doors just don't stain right either, we have used the wood conditioner on them and it still isn't getting the right color. Also we've brought samples of all the woods to professionnal stainers and they either can't get what I'm looking for. Any suggestions? And the reason we our putting ourselves through this dilemma is that the house is 100, some stuff was salvageable, some was not, so we got deals on alot of the new stuff, like the pine doors and walnut floor and we need to take the deals where we can get them after spending a fortune on the house. fyi.

  1. I think what you are trying to do is impossible. You really need to lower your expectations, by staining everything with solid color stain or buy new all matching wood for everything.

I'm sorry to tell you but your not going to get all you ask for-- your having your cake and eating it too

Ok, buy a staining kit that has samples of many stains in it, you can buy it at a wood workers store or a good paint store. your going to have to custom mix all your stains until you get the color your looking for-- and your going to have to do it for every different wood you have. Don't forget to buy samples of all the different woods you have for testing. It might take several months to get it all just right.

  2. Green tinting reduces red tones toward the brown color desired.  dont ask a shhmo  at either depot either .please.   Benjamnin Moore american walnut or walnut.
