Hughes beat Gracie at UFC 60 because.....?

c Gracie was inactive for a bit. Also it was a new breed of fighter and Royce was not used to this style and finesse. The guys that he dominated in the early UFCs were first timers for the most part. Matt Hughes had been in this new breed who are proven to be better athletes than Royce.

A and B + Gracie did not have nearly any true striking ability that Hughes had to worry about. Gracie is also getting pretty old. I love where he said "This is the house that I built", when in reality it is actually the house his Dad and brother built where they put him in against no name fighters.

A & B, Matt and Gracie are a perfect example at how the sport is evolving. In Gracie's day he was the most well rounded. Matt was a more well rounded fighter and beat him. Now even better fighters are coming like GSP.

c- In the beginning royce had technique which beat strength. In royce's original day no one else had that level of technique. In this new age of mma fighters have evolved and now have technique and strength. Hughes had both strength and technique.

Gracie is a one dimensional fighter who  was able to win in the old days of UFC because his competition had no idea how to fight on the ground.

Hughes is a well rounded fighter who can fight on the ground or on his feet.  He had far more weapons than Gracie does.

BJJ is a great submission style, but MMA has evolved to the point where it takes more than just one fighting style to be successful.

Gracie never really evolved with the sport and never really had a chance.

I think they both have comprable amounts of raw talent, but Hughes did a lot more with his than Gracie did.

Gracie was also pretty old when he fought Hughes and way past his prime;  never underestimate the ravages of time and the effect that it has on a fighter.
