Hughes wants Arsenal to back off from Mark Schwarzer
The English Premier League club, Arsenal has been pursuing the services of Fulham’s goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer for a while now. The Gunner’s Manager Arsene Wenger has made it no secret that he is looking for an experienced man between the posts and the Australian keeper would make a good fit but on the other hand, The Cottagers’ manager Mark Hughes has warned that the constant pursuit for Wenger is unsettling his goalkeeper and it has to stop.
Earlier, Arsenal had made a bid of 2 million pounds in May for Schwarzer but Fulham rejected that offer. Despite this, The Gunners are believed to have made yet another offer but Fulham haven’t responded to it as of today. Also, Schwarzer had submitted a transfer request to his club but Hughes, who recently took over Fulham, wants him to stay. Sparky told the media that he is starting a new chapter in Fulham’s history and would want a man with experience to be between the posts. He said that Schwarzer has been in the English game for a while now and understands its dynamics and requirements; it would be difficult to replace a man like him on such short notice, so he would prefer to have him stay. The former Manchester United player added that constant pressure from Wenger is not healthy for Schwarzer and neither for the club.
The golie hadn’t featured in Fulham’s starting lineup during the season’s first game against Bolton. That gave way to a lot of speculation that Hughes may not be happy with the transfer request made by the former Middleborough man. However, Hughes rubbished such speculation saying that it was only due to an injury while the Aussie remains their number one in the goal.
Mark Schwarzer, during his 13 years at the EPL, has played 450 games. That’s the very reason why Hughes wants to hold on to the veteran. He said that the whole club management would try to convince him to stay but still at the end it would be his own decision that would ultimately matter. Hughes stated that there hasn’t been an improved bid from Arsenal; however, he also doesn’t encourage any. Schwarzer had made his way to the Craven Cottage in May 2008. Before that he spent his 11 years at Middleborough.
