Hughton dismisses Spurs' Carroll interest
Newcastle manager Chris Hughton has laughed off speculation linking Andy Carroll with a move to Tottenham. The Magpies boss said: "Amused is probably the right word – I thought the window
had closed.”
Carroll, 21, is one of the most highly-rated English players around at the moment, with the Newcastle No 9 even talked about as a potential call up to the England squad. After smashing
in 19-goals last season, as Newcastle romped to the Championship title, many wondered whether he would be able to carry the same kind of threat back in the Premier League. Early signs are good for the Magpies as Carroll has already hit four goals this term,
including a hat-trick in the six-goal demolition of Aston Villa last month. Hughton was quick to point out his good start to the season was bound to throw up speculation although stating there was little substance to it. "He has started the season very well
and with any player who is doing well, you expect some speculation.”
This may well be the case, but if Carroll keeps up the kind of early season form he has already produced, Spurs and clubs of similar stature will certainly be circling in the near future,
and Newcastle aren’t the heavyweights they once were.
Having said that, Carroll is a local lad and would no doubt be reluctant to leave the north-east in a hurry. Now possessing the club’s infamous No 9 shirt, worn previously by the likes
of Malcolm McDonald, Alan Shearer and Jackie Milburn, Carroll has the potential to go on to become a Geordie legend, like the aforementioned trio.
It’s all hypothetical of course, but Carroll could have some interesting and difficult decisions to make in the not too distant future. No doubt he’ll just be focusing on helping to keep
his current side in the Premier League for now though.
