Hugo Dellien, Karim Hossam successful in opening round – 2011 US Open Boys’ Singles
Hugo Dellien of Bolivia battled past American tennis player Dennis Novikov 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday to make it to the second round of 2011 US Open Boys’ singles here at Flushing Meadows in New York City.
Competing at the US Open for the first time in his tennis career, Dellien showed no signs of nerves as he required only one hour and 9 minutes to down his opponent in the opening round match on Court 4. Although the match lasted
for just over an hour, it was played on a competitive note as both players worked hard to take the psychological advantage over one another.
Timing the ball to perfection, the number four seed Hugo Dellien made a solid start to the match. Hitting the ball really hard from the baseline, he created all sorts of problems for his opponent to take control of the situation.
Breaking the serve early in the first set, he ensured his driving position in the match as he took a handsome 4-2 lead.
Novikov was also up for the challenge as he broke straight back to lift his moral. Using his strong serves as a weapon, the American hit crucial serve aces to even the game score. However, Dellien continued to play his natural
game freely and he broke the challenger once more to clinch the opening set with a 7-5 score line.
The second set was also played on a pretty similar note as both players entertained the crowd with some top quality tennis. Dellien made most of the available opportunities in the set and he seemed to be running away with the game.
However, it was Novikov who made the first serve break to spice things up at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre.
Breaking back, Dellien showed great determination to stay in the set as he levelled the game score 4-4. Breaking the serve for the fourth time in the match, he took a crucial 5-4 lead, serving for the set. Dashing a big forehand
winner cross court, he ended the match in great style to book his place in the next round.
In another match at the ATP tournament, Egyptian Karim Hossam defeated local Ronnie Schneider 6-1, 6-4 comfortably to book his place in the second round.
Hossam looked in commanding form in a match that lasted for less almost sixty seven minutes on court 6. Breaking his opponent’s serve five times in the match, he upped his game play whenever it was required. Hossam dropped only
a game in the opening set and although some competitive tennis was seen in the second set, Hossam emerged victorious quite easily.
