Hugo Sabido wins the yellow jersey at Volta Portugal em Bicicleta – Cycling Update
Hugo Sabido wins the first stage of Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta as he sprinted his way across the finish line to win the yellow jersey. It was a short 2.2 kilometre time trial stage at Fafe and the Portugese cyclist had no problems at all as he finished
the stage in 3 minutes and 4 seconds, six seconds faster than Cardoso, who finished second.
After winning the stage he told the media that the two cyclists he always wanted to beat were Filipe Cardoso and Thomas Dekker as both these cyclists are experts in time trials. Thomas Dekker was 10 seconds short of Sabido as he finished at 16th
position.
Sabido shared his feelings after winning the race as he stated, “It’s incredible, it’s a feeling of euphoria which I hope to share with all my colleagues. I know they are all happy. It’s really too bad that the whole family isn’t here. I am very, very happy.”
Sergio Sousa won the blue mountain jersey as he was the fastest at the intermediate sprint.
Hugo leads the points table with 10 points with Filipe Duarte Sousa Cardoso with 8 and Bruno Silva at third position with 4 points. Bruno Silva of Portugal leads the young rider’s classification with a total time of 3 minutes and 10 seconds with Jacob Rathe
of USA at second and Italian cyclist Alfredo Balloni at third position after the stage 1 of the Tour.
Team LA-Antarte leads the team classification after the first stage of Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta with a total time of 9 minutes and 26 seconds, Barbot-Efapel with 9 minutes and 35 seconds and Onda-Boavista with 9 minutes and 40 seconds on second and
third positions respectively.
Cyclists will be engaged for a total of 12 days during the Tour as they have to go across 10 different stages with one rest day after the stage 5. Spanish cyclist David Blanco has won the race in 2010 and 2008 while he finished 1 minute and 24 seconds behind
the Portuguese winner Nuno Ribeiro in 2009.
Second stage of the Tour is between Trofa and Oliveira do Bairro with two climbs during the 187.7 kilometre of riding followed by an uphill climb finish.
