Hull City sign Arsenal striker
Hull City today announced that they have signed Jay Simpson from English Premier League outfit Arsenal. The 21-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the Football League Championship outfit and is set to make his debut against Watford on Saturday.
Simpson has become Tigers manager Niger Pearson’s fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Nolberto Solano, James Harper and Robert Koren. Several other Championship sides had been interested in securing his services, including Bristol City and Leeds United, but Hull was always said to be his preferred choice.
The youngster’s agent Leon Callender revealed to the Hull Daily Mail newspaper earlier this week that: "He sees Hull as a good Championship club and feels it would be a good move for him. He travelled up to Hull last week for a look around and has spoken to the gaffer. Now it is just down to the clubs to agree a deal."
Struggeld to make impact
Simpson had struggled to make an impact in the Arsenal first team after coming through the youth ranks at the London club. In the 2007-08 season, he was farmed out on loan to Millwall, where he enjoyed a successful spell. He netted eight goals in 44 appearances for the club and won the Professional Footballers’ Association fans Football League One player of the year award. Simpson was thankful for the chance to play first team football at Millwall, an experience which he said had helped him “really developed my game” and “grow as a player”.
The striker was loaned out again to West Bromwich Albion for the second half of the 2008-09 season and scored twice in 16 matches. He enjoyed a further loan spell when he joined Queens Park Rangers for the 2009-10 season and netted 13 times in 41 matches. Simpson has also received international recognition having played for the England Under-17 and Under-18 sides.
