Hull FC and Wigan Warriors sustain injuries as Warriors win 30-16: Rugby League
Lee Radford of Hull FC has broken his jaw during a match in which Hull was defeated by Wigan Warriors in the Engage Super League, on Friday, July 29. The sting of defeat was not the only loss for the team as Radford ended up on the injury list and may be
out of the club for an unknown duration.
Hulls lost 16-30 against Warriors in a match which was played at Kingston Communications (KC) Stadium. With this defeat, Hulls have already lost four out of the last five games played, which translates in to a miserable place on the tables.
Hulls have lost their chance for the play-offs with their recent bad performance against Warriors. On the Rugby League tables, Hulls are floating on the number eight spot, while Warriors have successfully retained the top spot in the league.
Most observers expected Hulls FC to give a tough match to the Warriors. Even though the Warriors walked away winners they paid heavily by losing players to injury just ahead of the Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-finals against St. Helens at Warrington, which
is scheduled for next week.
Gareth Hock and Sean O'Loughlin were the first casualties of the day on the field. Whereas, Sam Tomkins, who scored two tries for the Warriors, was also having trouble with his shoulder and was restricted to the sidelines. Three first choice players going
down at such a critical phase of the season may spell trouble for the top ranked Wigan squad.
Hull took off with an inaugural try by Kirk Yeaman, which was his 19th of the season. In rebuttal, the Warriors scored a try through Tomkins, which was followed by two tries from Pat Richards and one from George Carmont.
Four unanswered tries by Warriors during the first-half of the game, put them in the lead as Hulls fought back for short spells of time during the second-half of the game. Adding to the injury list of Warriors, is Carmont, who had a hard time during the
second-half of the clash when Hulls had geared up to fight back.
Michael Maguire, Head Coach for Wigan, is hopeful that all his players will be able to recover before their next scheduled fixture and is not worried about the injuries sustained during Hulls FC match.
While commenting on Friday night’s clash, Maguire stated, “It was a game where we expected Hull to turn up and put on a tough game and they did. Physically it was a tough game for our players. We had a few walking wounded but they should all be okay. That
says a lot about the game.”
