Question:

Human Resources Advised me to do this.. WHY? ?

I resigned on Monday from my job. I gave notice to my immediate manager who was NOT receptive to my notice. It was hostile, she got personal and very unprofessional. I will say this interaction made me physically ill with a migraine and I have been nauseated since. I didn't want to leave my job but I was offered a higher salary and on that I based my move.

My illness and thought of more harassement from my boss was too much. Under medical advisement it was suggested I quit immediately and notify my office. Which I did. I told them due to personal reasons I would not be able to full fill my job requirements for the next two weeks..

The big boss over my boss emailed me and asked me to elaborate on my comment of "personal reasons" and under advisement of our HR dept she wanted me to report my managers hostile remarks. SO I emailed a very well writte outline of the happenings.. full details, and my feelings as a result of the interaction including naming one of my colleagues who saw me in uncontrollable tears after the "attack".

I have NO idea what this will do for me, HR stated I needed to inform the higher ups of this incident so they "wouldn't think badly of me". Does she think my attacking manager was in the wrong? What can they do about since I already quit?

  1. It sounds like the big boss is on your side. My guess is that she wanted you to document the problems in case anyone in the future had problems with the same manager. Perhaps there have already been complaints and she wants wants to build a well-documented case to fire your former manager.

    Don't worry!

  2. This is likely guess work without knowing more about the situation ~ however, it sounds as though the HR people are gathering information to deal with your old boss and inappropriate behaviour on her part vs. anything about you.

Congratulations on your new job and position.  & don't take other peoples bad behaviour personally.  (hard thing to do sometimes; however necessary in the long run)

  4. As a union officer I have seen this so many times, and the stubbern reluctance of higher management to react positively has plunged many companies and government projects into oblivion.

Why they stick together allowing someone who is clearly a liability to destroy their company is an unending source of amazement to me.

My advice to higher management is quite clear, if you get repeated reports of bullying bad management and general low staff moral: GET RID or your company will be in administration in the near future.

  5. It sounds as if you may be in a better place now than before.  Not knowing the whole picture or your department's dynamics I have to go from past experience and say that it seems that your former manager took your resignation very personally.  This may show a lack of security on her part and has possibly been identified as an area of concern by her boss and HR.  Having a record of an incident will help her boss and HR take necessary corrective action to ensure that this type of behaviour does not occur again.

I am sure that you are much happier in your new position and should focus on your challenges ahead and not worry about what may be occuring in your last position.
