  1. Cracking of bones are due to the following reasons

    1. Escaping gases--- Synovial fluid (liquid in joints) has the gases oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide dissolved in it. When you crack the joint  or during movement capsule is stretched and the gas escapes causing the snap

    2. When tendons return to the normal position a snapping or cracking sound may be heard and this can occur while walking.

    3. Arthritic joints may crack due to loss of the smooth cartilage and the roughness of the joint surface.

If you feel pain when the joint cracks you should show a doctor,

Some studies have shown that repetitive knuckle cracking leads to damage of soft tissue around the joint, a weak grip and swollen hands.

If cracking occurs spontaneously during movement it may be harmless but if pain occurs you should show an orthopedic surgeon to exclude joint disease.

    I am a medical doctor.
