Human like mythological beings?

I'm planning on writing a modern fantasy novel just for fun. I'm trying so hard to think of mythological beings (Not vampires or werewolves.) that could live among humans without being noticed. While still possessing some nonhuman qualities.

  1. Have you ever thought of Selkies. They are creatures that appear human on land, but when they put on their seal skin they transform into a seal. If a person takes a selkie's skin, that man or woman is forced to work for them and/or marry them. However, if a Selkie recovers their skin they are allowed to escape.

Selkies have always facisnated me the most :)

  2. Ok heres my list of humanoid creatues

    mermaids

    sirens

    nymphs

    harpies

    centaurs

    minotaurs

As for human looking sirens and nymphs are closest to me

  3. Nonhuman beings that could pass as human:

    Mermaid

    Selkie

    Nymph (Wood, River, Sea, etc.)

    Nereid

    Elf

    Fairy

    Angel

    Demon

    God/Goddess

    Valkyrie

    Were(anything)

  4. Shape shifters would be a good place to start!

  5. angels, demons, elves, dwarves,

  6. go off the beaten path -

research 'kitsune' - Japanese fox women.  Not only will it give you the whole 'hiding in plain sight' angle but it will let you weave an ancient culture into modern times that's not the 'same old, same old' that most people expect from 'they live amoung us and we know them not' stories.  would love to read it if you do.

  7. mermaids like on h2o , when they touch water they have 10 seconds till they grow tails . #

  8. How about the Boogerman

  9. research NORSE MYTHOLOGY.

what about drones (dark elves). or half evles
