Humberto Soto: I will brawl intelligently to outsmart Lucas Martin Matthysse – Boxing News
In a recent press conference, Humberto Soto, the former WBC lightweight champion, called Lucas Martin Matthysse, the current WBA Intercontinental light welterweight champion, a powerful brawler with a decent knockout jab. However, he added that he
will outsmart the Argentinean by his intelligence in the ring.
Soto and Lucas are scheduled to take on each other in a 12-round bout, which will be held on June 23, 2012. The pay-per-view is being organised and promoted by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions and will be televised live on Showtime’s weekly Saturday
night boxing show.
The duo will headline the fight card, with the bout between Victor Ortiz and Josesito Lopez for the vacant WBC Silver welterweight title co-headlining the showdown. Lucas and Soto, both shared their thoughts regarding their upcoming showdown, along with
their career experiences.
Soto, 32, is close to reach yet another milestone of his career. The veteran has been in a total of 68 bouts. He just needs two more victories to reach the 60-win milestone. The Mexican proud currently boasts 58 wins with 34 coming via sheer knockouts.
Also known as the ‘La Zorrita’ or ‘The Crafty Little Fox’, Humberto is on a 15-bout win streak since his last loss to Francisco Lorenzo. During the media interaction, when asked as to how he feels about his upcoming opponent Lucas, Soto stated, “Winning
60 fights would be great, but winning another world title is what I really want. Matthysse is a great fighter with a very respectful power punch. I’m going to fight a very intelligent fight. I’m going to follow my corner’s directions and go in there and outbox
him and be the smarter fighter.”
Lucas, 29, Soto’s Saturday night opponent, is visibly under pressure by the Mexican’s experience. Currently ranked as 11th in World Boxing Organisation’s rankings, Lucas has been in a total of 33 bouts and has emerged victorious in 30.
The Argentinean pounder has pinned 28 of his opponents by knockout. He is infamous for being a lethal knockout pounder with a powerful fist at his disposal. Lucas has lost just two bouts in his career, both being somewhat dubbed as controversial decisions.
When asked as to what he feels about colliding with Soto, Lucas simply stated, “It’s very simple, I need to go to war. I need to put a lot of pressure on him and I need to work hard and win every round. That’s the gameplan – go to war. I’m going to leave
it all in the ring.”
