Humble and Hungry eased past rivals in the mid stretch to win the Commonwealth Turf
It was a steady afternoon rainfall on the morning of 3 November, which resulted in early scratches, including the morning line favourite Pluck and three from the also eligible list.
After the Grade 3, $111,200 Commonwealth Turf Stakes was trimmed, the grade 3 event was left with a field of seven 3-year-olds to test their mettle over at the distance of 1 1/16 miles over good ground at rainy Churchill Downs on 3 November, 2011.
It was the 3-year-old colt, Humble and Hungry, who shell shocked his opponents after soaring past them near the mid stretch to post an easy upset to win the race.
Trained by Ignacio Correas IV for Sagamore Farm, Humble and Hungry went on to post his first graded stakes win.
This year the son of Limehouse, out of Cukee by Langfuhr, Humble and Hungry participated in a grade 3 event and also a grade 2 event and in both races the 3-year-old managed a third place finish. Since breaking his maiden Humble and Hungry has been there
and thereabouts excluding an immediate set back right after his maiden when he finished 8th in the Grade 2 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last year.
In the Commonwealth Turf Stakes, Humble and Hungry under jockey J Lezcano settled between horses to begin with, as Live in Joy after breaking from the rail impressively took command over Perregaux and set out to set fractions of 23.53 seconds for the opening
quarter mile and 48.49 seconds for the half mile.
The rampant colt reached the six furlong marker in 1 minute and 14.15 seconds. After setting brisk fractions Live in Joy gave way to the stalking Perregaux who held off the run form Silver Medallion nearing the mid stretch.
Jockey Lezcano then angled Humble and Hungry five paths wide for the drive, while Garrett Gomez’s ride Wilkinson rallied belatedly for the wire to overcome the tiring Silver Medallion.
The 11 to 1 shot Humble and Hungry won while eased down by 1 ¼ lengths over Wilkinson who finished second ahead of Silver Medallion by half a length as Humble and Hungry covered the 1 1/16 mile distance in 1 minute and 45.24 seconds.
