  1. Depends on the species (there are many).  In the eastern US and Canada, the only hummingbird that one would normally see is the ruby-throated hummingbird; they winter in Central America as far south as Panama.  Further west in the US, there are more species; they also winter in Central and South America.

(Of course, those that "winter" in South America experience no winter whatsoever; when it's winter here, it's summer there.)

This is one reason why conservation efforts in Latin America have an impact north of the Rio Grande.  Many of the birds we see during the warmer months spend about half of their time in the Neotropics (or going to or from there).  Loss of habitat there means fewer birds here.

  2. They do migrate south into the tropics. Some may over winter in very far south Texas.

  3. Yes, most species of hummingbirds do migrate.  They spend their winters in Mexico, Central and South America.  They do not migrate in groups like geese or ducks...they migrate alone.  There are some hummingbirds that stay put year round.  The Anna's Hummingbird that we get here in California does not migrate and can be seen anytime of the year.

  4. Hummingbird is migratorybird spending most of the winter in southern Mexico, Central America as far south as South America, and the West Indies.
