Hung Ling, Wen Hsing seize Mixed Doubles crown in Australian Open GP Gold 2012
The Mixed Doubles pair of Chen Hung Ling-Cheng Wen Hsing of Chinese Taipei seized the crown after beating the Malaysian pair Peng Soon Chan-Liu Ying Goh in title match of Australian Open GP Gold on April 8, 2012.
Second seeded duo of the event, Hung Ling-Wen Hsing kissed the trophy after the scoreboard flashed final figures of 22-20, 12-21 and 23-21 in their favour.
The epic 63-minute tussle was full of drama as it kept swinging between the contestants throughout the three games.
The Taipei shuttlers proved their supremacy by dominating most part of the game but they literally had to earn this victory as their challengers Peng Soon and Liu Ying did not surrender until the last moment.
The opening game set the overall tone of the match as both teams played attacking badminton to push the opponents on the back foot.
First half of the set belonged to the Malaysian pair who established a comfortable lead of four points in the beginning and later came into commanding position with 14-9 score but the Taipei shuttlers Hung Ling and Wen Hsing accelerated their pace in the
second half of the set.
They caught their rival duo Peng Soon-Liu Ying with 18-18 score position and then left their opponents far behind with two consecutive points in the end.
The final score of 22-20 remained in the Taipei’s favour and fetched them first match point.
However, the story was completely different in the following game as the World Number eight duo Peng Soon-Liu Ying outclassed their higher ranked rivals in all areas of the game.
They established an unassailable lead in first part of the game by scoring some quick points and managed their upper hand throughout the game.
They made the spectators gasp with their court craft and bagged the crucial match point with a distinctive margin of 21-12 on the scoreboard.
Third set turned consequential as the both teams were standing at the same level with a 1-1 match score position.
Malaysians made swift progress on the scoreboard with 8 points in the beginning but the World Number five duo of Hung Ling-Wen Hsing stretched when it mattered and placed a decent margin of 15 points in middle of the game.
In later part of the set both finalists remained close till the game point but the Taipei shuttlers sealed the crown with a tight yet decisive 23-21 score on the board.
