Question:

Hungarian Surname? ?Chiantha?

I've been researching my ancestors, and have come across a peculiar Hungarian name.

I found this out by word of mouth, and I guess the base of the name is Chiantha. There's a chance that letters are confused or missing. Since I've been searching this name I've come up with nothing, it was my Great-great-grandmothers maiden name, unfortunately she married a man with the last name Szabo- which I've found is pretty common.

Any help would be appreciated! Whether the name is translated funny or ANYTHING!

Thank you!

  1. The way you are spelling the name may be an Anglicized version so that it is easier to pronounce.  try looking for it as Csijantha  or Csÿantha

in Hungarian Cs sounds like Ch and ij or ÿ sounds like a long i.

Szabó means tailor, so yes that would be a common name.

also traditionally Hungarian names are written family name first and personal name second, so if it is a Hungarian document you are reading then it is possible you are looking at someone's personal name and not a family name.

    edit to add:

    I got curious

I found a surname Csintalan which means "naughty"

I also found a Hungarian Research site:  don't know if you already know about this one.

    have fun!

  2. I spotted a message on ancestry.com from someone researching CHIANTHA. It stated that the last letter may be missing. This may be you or one of your relatives.  It was posted in 2000.

If this is not you or someone you are familiar with you may find a lead by making contact.  In 8 years something more may have been found out.  If you do not have ancestry access, email me privately and I will get you the information you need to make contact.

A search using the 'Ch' beginning found that all hits were names originating in Italy.

I tried searching using the 'CS"/"CZ" beginning and am including the hits from this search.  You may spot a name that rings a bell for you.  Or, maybe spot the town.

It may take 10 seconds for the info. to appear, but it will.  I did this search using the Steve Morse portal to the Ellis Island Database. Don't forget to go to the bottom of the page and click on the other groups to see all of the hits. http://tinyurl.com/6mrgs7

If you happen to have the handwritten sample of the surname, and can place it online, this would help us analyze the letters themselves.  It is easy to misinterpret the script used at the time, if you are unfamiliar with it.

Good luck on solving your mystery.

  3. I am Hungarian but I never heard of that name before. Szabo is a common name, that is familiar.Or could be coming from Romanian: Chianta. I never heard it but it could be possible , it sounds Romanian. "ch" is used by Romanians ,in Hungarian we don't use that. Or could be from somewhere else, I am not sure.
