  1. For starters.. you will find accurate information, when you use documents that concern your actual relatives, not the surname.

If your grandfather Mikita (for example) is the person who immigrated from Hungary, to the US.. then you need to learn his name and age, his wife, AND most likely, his immigration record. If he became a citizen, that will have info about his place of birth.

Eastern Europe has a long history of countries changing their boundaries. Once you find the name of a town/village, then you will determine which records exist for that place. You also need a time frame, which you determine from records here.

If you start at home and build from yourself to an ancestor who was in the US pre 1930, they should be in the census, and ancestry also has some immigration indexes.  If you have a name (not someone living) you can post it here, and someone will probably do a lookup for you.

  2. This is the meaning of Mikita from ancestry.com:

Ukrainian (Mykyta), Slovak, and Polish: from the personal name Mykyta or Mikita, Greek Niketas (see Nikitas). The Polish and Slovak surnames may be of Ukrainian origin or alternatively derivatives of the personal names Mikolaj (Polish) or Mikuláš (Slovak) (see Nicholas).

There are Mikitas listed from Germany, Austria, Hungary and Italy in the 1900 census.

If you post the names here, someone may be able to help.
