Hungary beat Greece in preliminary round, Group A: Day six – European Water Polo Championships
Hungarian national team beat Greece in their fourth Men’s water polo preliminary match of Group ‘A’ on sixth day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Saturday, January 21 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
Hungary faced strong competition from Greece in the four-quarter game but claimed victory by a margin of just two goals. Greece’s squad suffered their first defeat of the tournament at the hands of Hungarian players with a 9-7 deficit in the 32-minute game.
The Hungarian team dictated terms to their competitors from the beginning of the game. They scored two goals in the first quarter while Greece succeeded in accomplishing just one goal and the score remained 2-1 after the initial round.
Subsequently, Greek players elevated their efforts in second round and scored two goals. On the contrary, Hungarian team responded by scoring four goals and the score went up to 6-3 after the halftime.
The third round was dominated by Greek players, who overwhelmed Hungary’s two goals effort by notching up three goals, reducing the lead to just two goals. Subsequently, both teams scored just one goal in the final quarter and Hungary managed to remain unbeaten
in the tournament by winning the match with a difference of two goals.
On the other hand, the spectators witnessed an eye-catching performance of Spanish squad that ended in a 10-10 draw with Montenegrin team in their fourth Men’s qualifying match of Group ‘B.’ The first quarter of the game was dominated by Montenegrin team
as they proved their mettle over Spain with a 2-1 effort.
In contrast, the Spanish squad remained dominant in second quarter, where they scored four goals to overwhelm Montenegro’s three goals struggle and the score remained 5-all after the halftime.
Subsequently, despite of their persistent efforts, both teams failed to surpass each other in the second half. They scored three goals each in the third round whereas the fourth quarter saw a 2-all effort from both sides and the match ended in a tie.
Furthermore, the session completed after the commendable efforts of both teams and the championship will end on January 29 after the conclusion of all scheduled matches.
