Hungary claims victory over British Women’s Water Polo Team: 2011 FINA World League
Hungary Women’s Water Polo team beat the British Women’s Water Polo Team by 14-9 at the 2011 FINA World League in Barcelona.
The British Women’s Water Polo Team, powered by British Gas, were up against the most challenging and toughest side this time but they put on a good show and gave their best performance against Hungary.
At the end of the first quarter, Hungary Women’s Water Polo team were leading by 6-2. At the half time, the Brits had made a strong comeback by scoring two goals over their opponents. By then, Hungary were ahead 8-4 in the match. However, they enhanced their
lead to a large extent (13-5) by scoring five consecutive goals over the Brits net in the third quarter of the match.
The British Women’s Water Polo team scored one more goal over Hungary in the later stages of the match and lost the match by a margin of 14-9 at Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Captain Fran Leighton stated, “Unfortunately a slow start in the first quarter let us down and left us with a massive job to do. We fought back hard to win the final quarter 3-1 which was a great achievement. We are now looking forward to another
strong performance against Spain tomorrow.”
The Brits had won the vital match over Greece by 10-9 in the last week.
“We are delighted with the result. It’s the first time we have beaten Greece. It is a great start to the World League,” said Rutlidge.
Meanwhile, the British Women’s Water Polo team has returned home after an encouraging performance in the World League in Barcelona.
Their next Water Polo campaign will be Athens wherein they will vie against Spain, Greece and Ukraine from May 20 – 22, 2011.
The top two winners will go into the FINA World League Super Finals which will take place in Tianjin, China from June 14 – 19, 2011.
One of the objectives of organising the FINA World League is to provide sufficient opportunities to the European Water Polo teams for the upcoming Olympic Games in London 2012.
In the meantime, the British Women’s Water Polo team is preparing themselves hard for their London Olympic campaign.
On the other hand, the Spanish Women’s Water Polo team is looking threatening in the FINA World League 2011 round-up matches in Barcelona and have a decent chance of clinching the World League Super Final this time.
