Hungary defeat Turkey in preliminary round, Group A: Day eight – European Water Polo Championships
Hungarian team served notice of their talent by defeating Turkey in their fifth Men’s water polo qualifying match of Group ‘A’ on eighth day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Monday, January 23 at the Pieter van den
Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Hungarian squad dictated terms to their opposing team from the start of the match, as they overwhelmed Turkish team with a lead of 20 goals. The Turkish squad failed to give a tough time to their rival team and lost the match with a score of 22-2 in
the four-quarter game.
With the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games, the European championships are of substantial value as these provide an opportunity to the international teams to prepare themselves for the upcoming battle royal.
The first quarter saw ruthless aggression of Hungarian team that advanced on the scorecard by accomplishing six goals. They impeded all goal attempts of their challenging squad and the round expired with a score of 6-0.
The arena witnessed a slight change on the scorecard in second quarter, where the Hungarian squad yet again notched up six goals while the Turkish team managed to pass the ball in their opponent’s cage just for once, making the score 12-1 after the first
half.
Just like the first quarter, where Turkey failed to score a goal, the third quarter saw gruelling efforts of Hungarian squad that accomplished four goals. On the other hand, Turkish team did not manage to score a single goal and the score went up to 16-1
after the third quarter.
Hungary’s victory was inevitable but their thirst for goals was misjudged by the arena. The Hungarian team made no mistake and once again notched up six goals while Turkey proved successful in improving their score by just one fraction and lost the match.
Balazs Harai of Hungary scored four goals and was declared man of the match for playing a significant role in his team’s victory. In addition, Hungarian team has qualified for the semi-final while Turkey will have to play against Spain in the quarterfinal
on Wednesday, January 25.
