Hungary overwhelm Italy in preliminary round, Group A: Day one – European Water Polo Championships
Hungary’s national squad overwhelm Italy in their foremost water polo match of Group A on first day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Monday, January 16 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Hungarian squad faced tough competition from their opposing team in the first quarter but with their persistent efforts, they kept on enhancing their lead in next rounds and enjoyed a commendable 12-8 victory over Italy.
The first quarter of the game was dominated by Italian players, who scored three goals whereas the Hungarian squad managed to respond with two goals only.
However, the tables turned in the second quarter, where Hungary proved its supremacy and advanced on the scorecard by five goals. On the other hand, Italy failed to show any improvement on their points table and the score remained 7-3 after the first half.
The Italian squad tried to make a comeback in third round, where they found the cage three times, but their effort was cut short by Hungary’s four goals effort. In the final round, Hungary scored a lone goal while Italian team managed to notch two goals, but it was too late to undo the damage and Italy lost by four goals.
In the meantime, Croatia overpowered Romania and won the first qualifying match of Group B with a score of 10-7. The Croatian team gained a lead of one goal in the first round, where they scored two goals while Romania was able to accomplish one goal.
Similarly, the Croatian squad extended their lead to two points in the second round, where they marked three goals and Romania managed to add two goals to its scorecard.
Just like the first half, the Croatian squad took control over the ball and scored two goals in the third quarter against Romania’s one goal struggle. Subsequently, Both teams scored three goals each in fourth quarter and the final round expired with Croatia’s win by three goals.
The session concluded after the completion of all listed matches in both groups while the championship will continue for 13 more days and will end on January 29.
