Hungary overwhelm Spain in the Women’s quarterfinal: Day nine – European Water Polo Championships
Hungarian squad met the expectations of their fans by overwhelming Spain in the Women’s quarterfinal round on day nine of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Tuesday, January 24 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Hungarian team made no mistake in their fourth match of the championship and qualified for the semi-final round by overpowering Spain with a lead of two goals. With their incredible efforts throughout the four-quarter game, Hungary enjoyed a commendable
11-9 win over Spain.
These European Championships are of extensive importance as they pave the way for the 2012 London Olympic Games. These also provide a chance to world-class teams to compete with each other and overcome their shortcomings before the battle royal.
The first quarter of the match saw endless aggression of Hungarian squad that outperformed their challenging team by marking five goals. In contrast, the Spanish team managed to post two goals on the scorecard and the score remained 5-2 after the first round.
The same continued in the second quarter, where Hungarian squad served notice of their talent and scored three goals. Their effort was trailed by just one goal accomplishment from the Spanish side and the score went up to 8-3 after the first half.
The third quarter witnessed elevated efforts of Spanish squad, which tried to strengthen their position in the match, but failed to do so. They scored two goals in the third round while their effort was levelled out by Hungary, which also notched up two
goals, making the score 10-5.
The fourth quarter was dominated by Spanish team, which went rampant and accomplished four goals. Nevertheless, their effort was cut short by Hungarian team that scored just one goal in the final round and sustained their victory by a margin of two goals.
Gabriella Szucs of Hungary chipped in three goals and was declared player of the match for playing a crucial role in her team’s victory.
Furthermore, Hungarian team has qualified for the next round and they will compete with Greece in the semi-final while Spain will contest against Netherlands for fifth position on Thursday, January 26.
