Hungary overwhelms Russia in Women’s Water Polo: Quarterfinal – London Olympic Games
Hungary overwhelmed Russia in the Quarterfinal of Women’s Water Polo match on ninth day of the water polo events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in Water Polo Arena on Sunday, August 5.
The Hungarian team faced cut-throat competition from Russian squad throughout the 32-minute game but with their relentless efforts in the final round, they managed to claim victory by a margin of just one goal.
The first quarter of the game saw relentless efforts of water polo players from both sides. Russian squad served notice of their talent in the start and notched up two goals in the first two minutes of the game. Their effort of two goals was shortly matched by Hungary while both teams added one goal each and the quarter expired with 3-all.
The second quarter of the game was dominated by Hungary as they scored four goals to overpower two goals effort of Russia, making the score 7-5 after the first half.
Subsequently, the situation reversed in third quarter, where Russian team demonstrated their ruthless efforts and succeeded in proving their supremacy over the scorecard. They managed to block almost all efforts of their opposing team, as Hungary scored just one goal.
On the other hand, Russian team dictated terms to their opposing squad in the third round and proved successful in making the score even by notching up three goals. The score remained 8-all after the third round.
The last quarter of the game was very decisive, where Hungary wasted no time and took the lead by scoring three goals in the final round. In contrast, Russia was only able to score just two goals in the fourth quarter and lost the match by just one score.
Evgeniya Ivanova of Russia was the highest goal scorer of the match as she scored four goals but unfortunately, she was unable to place her team in the victory corner and lost the match.
In addition, Hungary will now compete with Spain in the semi-final of the game on Tuesday, August 7 and their fans are optimistic that they will make them proud by winning gold medal.
