Hungary suffers home loss during the second leg of European League – Volleyball news
The hosts of the second leg of 2012 CEV Women’s European League Hungary dropped the opening match to Spain on Friday.
The two teams came into contest at the Sportmax Competition Hall in Budapest, where Spain won the game in the straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-23). A crowd of 600 people watched the match. The home favourites gave a good competition to visiting Spaniards
but still put up with loss.
Victory moved Spain to 3-1 record in the tournament, while Hungary dropped another chance to break the ice. Hungary stands with 0-4 record after four matches of 2012 CEV European League.
Rita Liliom put up huge effort for home squad. She contributed match-high 14 points, which included nine spikes, four blocks, and one ace. On the other hand, the Spanish duo of GARCIA BONILLA and CORREA played an instrumental in their team’s victory. They
scored 13 and 9 points, respectively.
The home team was equipped with the support of local fans and also had the advantage of familiar conditions. However, the Hungarian ladies failed to profit from the competitive advantage. Spaniards opened the match on a high note and added a flurry of points.
They scored consecutive points and built a strong lead at the FTT, 8-2. Home squad was badly caught up in too many unforced mistakes, which further helped the visitors to take points. Romania could only shorten the gap of points but failed to chase the score.
The first set ended at 25-23 and Spain went on front, 1-0.
After dropping the first set, the hosts hit back aggressively in the second set. They did not make more silly mistakes and picked 8-6 lead at the first timeout. Gradually, Spaniard raised head and pushed the hosts behind. The visitors went up at the next
technical timeout (16-13). Thereafter, they staged a consistent play and claimed second frame, 25-20.
The scoring was tight in the early few minutes of the third set. Spain was totally shaped up to finish the game in third set, while Hungary tried to save the match. In the end, the Spanish ladies proved their endeavour and captured third set (25-23), which
led them to 3-0 victory.
The Head Coach of home team, Zoltan Jokay, seemed unhappy about the situation. He said, “We are always making the same mistakes, again and again, and as long as we do not fix this problem, we will not be able to win any match.”
Spanish mentor Francisco Manuel Hervas also had his say about the match. He commented, “It was a strange game and none of the teams played really well. Anytime we were leading, then we stopped playing well and let them come back.”
