Hungary upset Netherlands in preliminary round, Group A: Day five – European Water Polo Championships
Hungarian squad upsets Netherlands in their second Women’s water polo preliminary match of Group ‘A’ on day five of the ongoing 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven on Friday, January 20 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Hungarian team faced strong resistance from Netherlanders throughout the four quarter game. They kept following the lead of Netherlands in the first three quarters but elevated their struggle in the final round and won the match by a margin of just one
goal. The Netherlanders lost their second match of the tournament with a 9-8 deficit from Hungarian team.
With the emergence of 2012 London Olympic Games, the European Championships are considered to be of significant importance, as they provide a chance to international teams to compete with each other before the world’s mega event of sports.
The scores remained on a tight leash throughout the four quarter game. Both teams scored four goals each in the first quarter and the round ended with a 4-all effort from both sides.
Similarly, the second round was comparatively tougher than the first one, where both teams managed to notch up one goal on the points table and the first half ended with a score of 5-5.
The arena witnessed breath-taking performance of Netherlanders, who dominated the third round by taking a lead of two goals. They scored three goals in the third round while the Hungarian squad managed to score just one goal and the score went up to 6-8.
Nevertheless, the Hungarian squad geared up their efforts in the final round and blocked all goal attempts of their opponents. Netherlands failed to achieve any goal in the final round while Hungary elevated on the scorecard by accomplishing three goals.
The arena was stunned with the exhausting efforts of both teams while Hungarian team received a huge round of applause for their irresistible efforts.
Rita Keszthelyi and Gabriella Szucs of Hungary scored two goals each and played a vital role in their team’s victory. Furthermore, Hungarian squad is now set to compete with Russia in their third water polo match on Sunday, January 22.
