Hungary upsets Russia for Women’s bronze medal: Day 13 – European Water Polo Championships
Hungarian national squad has upset Russia by winning bronze medal of the Women’s event on thirteenth day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Saturday, January 28 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
Hungary experienced strong resistance from Russia in the four-quarter match, but managed to prove their mettle by just one point. The arena witnessed a strong battle throughout the 32-minute game where Hungary embraced victory with a 9-8 effort.
The championship is supervised by the European aquatic sports controlling body, Ligue Europeenne de Natation (LEN). With the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games, these championships are of considerable value as these provide an opportunity to elite players to improve their strategy before the mega stage of sports.
Hungarian team demonstrated their gruelling strategy in the first quarter, where they went on a rampage and occupied six goals. In contrast, Russian players responded by achieving just two goals and faced a deficit of four, as the score remained 6-2 after the first round.
The second quarter was dominated by Russian team, which geared up their struggle and succeeded in pocketing three goals while Hungary was able to improve their points by just one goal. With their stupendous effort, Russian players thrived in narrowing the loss to two goals as the score turned 7-5 after the halftime.
The third quarter saw scintillating efforts of both teams, which went rampant and notched up two goals against each other, making the score 9-7 in the third round.
The fourth quarter was comparatively tougher than the earlier ones, as both teams improved their strategy and struggled hard to assert their supremacy. Russian players managed to found their opponent’s cage in the last minute of the game, but their effort was inadequate to turn them into a strong position. Hungary failed to mark any goal in the final round, but snuggled victory by a lead of one goal.
Rita Keszthelyi of Hungary achieved five goals and was nominated player of the match for playing a strong part in her team’s win. In addition, the session completed after the conclusion of all scheduled events.
