Hungry Island comes up with a powerful performance to win the Lake Placid Stakes
Hungry Island, at Saratoga, parlayed her talents, as she ran her winning streak to an impressive 4 of 4 when the 3-year-old filly spurted past her foes to win the Grade 2 $150,000 Woodford Reserve Lake Placid Stakes by a convincing 2 ½ lengths on 21 August,
2011, on turf.
James toner trained 3-year-old roan filly, Winter Memories, was sent as the 2 to 5 favourite to win the race in the field of seven, ended up finishing fourth on the day was considered a major upset in this year’s Lake Placid Stakes.
On the other hand, the daughter of More than Ready, Hungry Island, enjoyed a massive win as she landed her first graded stakes win in her first attempt.
The same cannot be said about her maiden breaker, as it took her 4 long, excruciating attempts to land her first maiden stakes, but on the 5th time she was able to win over at a distance of 1 1/16 miles on turf at Belmont Park on 6 May, 2011 under
jockey Alex Solis.
Prior to the win at Saratoga, Hungry Island grabbed all her 3 wins of 3 starts at Belmont Park, including her maiden, an allowance race which was also run at a distance of 1 1/16 miles on the Belmont Park turf on 8 June, 2011.
Recorded Stakes was her 3rd win on the Belmont Park turf, as she comprehensively defeated her opponents with a winning time of 1 minute and 43.59 seconds on 2 July, 2011. My Redbyrd and Parting Words finished 1st and 2nd
respectively.
Sent at the odds of 9 to 1, Hungry Island started the race, trailing the field of seven in the first half a mile.
Under jockey Alex Solis, the filly angled out to match her strides with her opponents in the stretch run, but she was closed down quickly. The Claude McGaughey trained Hungry Island was sitting at fifth when Kathmanblu went ahead of the lot to lead.
Little did Kathmanblu know that she is no match for Hungry Island as she powered clear to top the 1 1/8 mile distance in 1 minute and 53.77 seconds. Kathmanblu and Dynamic Holiday finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
