Hunter Haas moves closer to PGA with Boise Open victory
Hunter Haas won his second tournament of the year, going seven-under on Sunday to win the Albertsons Boise Open by one stroke over Daniel Summerhays. Haas finished with a total score of 267, 21 under par.
The win has put him in an excellent position to earn a spot on the PGA tour next season.
Three wins on the Nationwide Tour gives a golfer an automatic promotion to the PGA Tour. The top 25 on the money list also get PGA Tour cards. Haas took home $130,500 by winning on Sunday, and moved from
12th to 4thon the money list. With only six tournaments remaining, it is likely that Haas will remain in the top 25 and move up to the PGA.
"It's awesome," said Haas. "Quite honestly I had a pretty slow start to the season but once I got the engines revved up I've been going pretty good."
Haas is no stranger to the PGA, he played full tours in 2001 and 2005, but has yet to win at that level.
"I'm going to be confident for the rest of the year and hopefully I can take that into the next season," he said.
The win on Sunday came at the expense of Summerhays, who went into the final round with a three stroke lead.
Summerhays looked good in the early stages of the fourth round hitting birdies on three of his first four holes, but Haas matched that with three birdies on his first five holes. From there Summerhays
played well hitting par on every hole, but Haas turned it on, birdying another four holes to earn the one-stroke victory.
"I just tried to make as many birdies as I could," said Haas. "That's the approach I've been taking the last couple of months. Be aggressive and try to win."
Summerhays won $78,300 for his second place finish and moved from 17th to 8th on the money list. The win should be enough for him to move up to the PGA Tour next year as well.
Tying for third were Jhonattan Vegas, Keegan Bradley, Kirk Triplett, and John Mallinger, who all hit 267, 17 under par.
Jamie Lovemark hit a 268 and tied for seventh place, it was his eighth top-10 finish of the season. He took home $23,381 to give him a total of $416,669 so far this season. He is the 11th player
to win over 400,000 in Nationwide Tour history. He also took over first place on the money list, passing Chris Kirk, who also surpassed the $400,000 mark earlier this season.
