Hunter Mahan all set to play the Masters
After finishing multiple events among the toppers, Hunter Mahan is now heading to Augusta National Golf Club to play the first major of the year, the Masters Tournament.
The 29-year-old American professional golf player is in the field of the $8,000,000 event, scheduled from the April 5 to 8, 2012. Out of the total purse, the winner will earn $1,440,000.
Recently, Mahan successfully won the title of the Shell Houston Open and bagged $1,080,000 earnings. He scored a 16-under 272 and competed well throughout the four-day tournament.
He defeated Carl Pettersson by one stroke and Louis Oosthuizen by two strokes. Mahan impressed his fans and the spectators on the course, tuning up for the first mega event of the year.
Now, he is excited for the upcoming mega event of the Masters and happy to play along the world's best players. His aims are also high and he desires to continue the winning streak.
"I feel great," said Mahan. "I had the lead for most of the back nine and hit some clutch shots. I'm playing good. I'm glad I'm going to Augusta - it's really a special place and I'm looking forward to going there".
He started the season from the Farmers Insurance Open, finishing tied for the sixth. Then, he finished the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on T15 and Northern Trust Open on T24 position.
Mahan defeated Rory McIlroy at the World Golf Championships – Accenture Match Play Championship and proved his commitment for the game.
Later, he played the Cadillac Championship and finished tied for the 24th position. However, he lost his focus at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and displayed a mediocre performance there.
Currently Mahan holds the 4th position in the Official World Golf Rankings. He appears to be in his full form after winning the Shell Houston Open successfully.
Now, he will have to face McIlroy again. Similarly, other top rivals like Luke Donald, Phil Mickelson, Martin Kaymer, Charl Schwartzel and 14-time major champion, Tiger Woods will also be confronting him.
The field is tough and competitive. Mahan is not the only player who is aiming the victory. Analysts said that hard work and consistency throughout the four rounds play a pivotal role in Augusta, Georgia.
