Hunter Mahan and Bo Van Pelt could be the dark horses in 2012 World Challenge
Tiger Woods may be the favourite to win the 2012 World Golf Challenge but there are other players who can give him a tough time on the field.
Zach Johnson is also being tipped by punters to win this year's World Challenge. However, in such a strong and competitive field anybody can pull up a surprise.
Another among the men capable of pulling a surprise at Sherwood Country Club is Hunter Mahan.
The world number 25 has not played much golf since the playoffs of the FedEx Cup, where he competed till the final round.
Mahan was disheartened when he was dropped from the US Ryder Cup team and took a lengthy break from golf to regain his focus.
Hunter, however, is capable of winning any tournament. He is a two-time winner this season on the PGA Tour. This shows that he can beat the best on his day.
The American has much to prove after his exclusion from the US Ryder Cup team. A victory at the 2012 World Challenge will give him a major boost in morale, as the top players are competing in the event.
The field for the World Golf Challenge is an absolute gem this year. Even the tournament organisers are impressed with number of big names turning up for the event.
"We are extremely excited about the depth and talent of our field, and are looking forward to another exciting tournament," Woods said in the announcement on the Tiger Woods Foundation website.
"Northwestern Mutual has been a great partner to my Foundation over the years, and we are pleased they will take on the role of presenting sponsor".
Another golfer who can surprise everybody with his showing is Bo Van Pelt. Bo has had a wonderful 2012 season with many consistent performances throughout the year.
The world number 23 has been in decent form recently. The American finished T2 in Malaysia. In fact, Bo nearly missed the magical number 59 at the CIMB Classic.
Both, Bo and Hunter will like to sign off their season in style with a victory at the 2012 World Challenge. This makes them the dark horses for this year's event.
