Hunter Mahan says Woods needs to work extra hard to get back on track – Golf News
Tiger Woods missed the cut at the Wells Fargo Championship and blamed his approach of ‘trying to feel comfort’ in his swing as the main reason for his failure.
According to Woods, whenever he tries to gain comfort in his swing, he gets back to his past and makes terrible shots.
On the contrary, when he is a little uncomfortable with that, he hits great and finds a better place for the ball to land.
He has now moved to TPC Sawgrass to participate in the Players Championship, an event that saw him earn a victory in 2001.
In the meantime, Hunter Mahan also had something to say on Tuesday as he can really understand what Woods said about his slumping performance at the Quail Hollow Country Club.
“I remember playing with (Woods) at Bay Hill, he was telling me what he was trying to do, and I could see him when he was swinging, he would just kind of fall back into it, and then he wouldn't hit the shot he was hoping for, and he knew it,” said Mahan,
who also has an experience with Sean Foley, Woods’s current swing coach.
“That's the tough thing with instincts and feelings. You think you're there, but you're just not. You have to go deeper. You have to get into a different position”.
Mahan believes that Woods will have to work extra hard with Foley to get back in form that once allowed him to become the best golfer in the world.
He said that when he started working with Foley, he was a good ball striker. Therefore, he became even better.
On the other hand, Woods is terrible in that context. Therefore, he will have to give his best to make huge improvements in his swing.
“Tiger was a terrible ball-striker, so he had to work so hard on getting back to planet earth, back to where he was before,” he said.
Woods recently commented on his website, saying he was working hard with Foley and plans to get back to the course with new force.
The tournament will begin on Thursday, May 10, 2012, offering a $9.5 million purse.
