Hunter Pence’s RBI gives Houston Astros 4-3 victory over Los Angeles Dodgers – MLB Update
Hunter Pence’s timely RBI single gave Houston Astros a seemingly unlikely 4-3 victory against Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, May 23.
Bud Norris, the starting pitcher for Houston Astros, pitched a scoreless inning to formally commence the game. Clayton Kershaw followed with equally effective pitches. However, the Dodgers soon opened their account with a run in the second inning.
Houston trailed 3-1 in the ninth inning, as Michael Bourn tied it after his two-out.
Matt Kemp homered to right to make it 1-0. Norris gave up two hits in the inning, one of which was subject to hit. Kershaw then brilliantly defended the Dodgers lead until the fourth inning when Humberto Quintero levelled the score with a single. Kershaw
gave up two hits in the inning.
Norris was then subject to hit by Andre Ethier in the seventh inning. When he came pitching for the Astros, Ethier singled to centre to score, followed by a throwing error by Bourn, making it 3-1 for Los Angeles.
The Astros were then comfortably in complete grip of the game. It was perhaps this confidence that proved detrimental. While Mike MacDougal, Sergio Escalona and Matt Guerrier, pitching for their respective teams, gave up a hit each but allowed no run.
It was in the ninth inning that Houston announced their come-back in the game. First, it was Bourn who doubled to right allowing Bill Hall and Angel Sanchez to score, resulting in a tie.
Pence’s inning buoyed all, but the team manager the most. "That was his inning," Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly said. "We got the guys we wanted in there. It was his pretty much his game. We couldn't let him go much farther as far as pitches go."
While Jansen had already given up two hits in the inning, his third proved the last nail in the Dodgers’ coffin. Pence singled to shallow left and brought a much-needed and equally surprising 4-3 victory for Houston Astros.
