Im 14, really small for my age, (i look like im 12 lol), and I am wanting to hunt this winter. I will be hunting deer and rabbits, and maybe some coons. I just need to know what gun to use. I need something that is accurate and something that doesnt kick and knock me down. Thanks

  1. A 20 gauge shotgun for Deer, Rabbits, and coon.* Use rifled slugs for the Deer.* Use number 4 or 5 BB bird shot for rabbit and coon.* It has moderate kick or recoil.* You pick the Brand you want, and the type of action.*

  2. i would a shotgun i think its the best gun available.for you get a 20 gauge....it doesn't have that much kick and its and all around great gun for everything

  3. 22LR will work well for rabbits and coons. The caliber for deer should be adequate, and you shouldn't be afraid of recoil in normal deer-class cartridges. You don't need anything so large as 30-06, and something as small as 243 will require that you use judgment on your shots, so I'd advise against going that small. But anything like 260 Remington, 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser, or 7mm08 will be quite suitable at any age. The problem with your size isn't reflected in the caliber but in the rifle itself. Most full-sized rifles will have a stock that has too long a length of pull. But there are several "youth" packages with a shorter stock that should do nicely, and the stock can be traded for a full-length one after you grow, without having to buy a whole new rifle.

  4. Most everywhere you can hunt rabbit & coon with a .22 LR which has hardly any recoil.  The minimum deer rifle which will be too big for rabbit & coon is the .243 Winchester.  This produces something like 7 lbs. of recoil so that's not too bad even for a small person.

    Good luck.

  5. i don't know where you live or are going to hunt but if its in the wide open west i would pick the 308. it has long range and is good for mule  deer and elk. it has a light recoil and allot of down range impact. for smaller game like rabbits and coon go with the tried and true .22 or .17

  6. Nevermind the lack of recoil making the 243 everybody's best "first gun". The 243 delivers 1000ft-lbs of energy past 400 yards, and is considered the premier meat gun by those in the know, as it doesn't destroy a basketball of steak, like the 30-06! Back in the late 1970's, a gunwriter shot 12 elk in an unbroken series of single-shot-kills with his 243, just to prove it could be done. He did use the 100 grain Nosler Partition bullets to do it, and recommended nobody else try, as he was an expert. I agree that his demo was stretching things, but I also use the same bullet just to have an edge in my 243 on meat deer hunts. I am pleased that the modest recoil and my precision trigger conspire to produce very good "field shooter accuracy", which is different from the gun's benchrest technical capabilities. A good gunsmith trigger job would have done as well.
