  1. OK.  Whitetail deer is one of the most fun and interesting game animals to hunt.  Here's what you need to do:

    1.  Put out trail cameras.  I suggest putting out several.  You will need to repostion the cameras a few times, but you will eventually get them in the right spot.  Once you do, you will be able to pattern some deer.  You can see where there coming in and out of the woods, and what time they are doing it.

    2.  Do some research.  Check the wind direction every day from now until hunting season.  Whitetail deer have an incredible sense of smell and will smell you before you see them.  Once you get the wind direction pretty much figured out, you can put up stands.  Put them facing where the wind will (most of the time) be blowing AWAY from where you think the deer are.  Also, you might want to use cover scent, and, more importantly that anything, USE WASHING POWDER THAT HAS NO SMELL!

    3.  Once hunting season arrives, you have to sit in your stands a lot a be patient.  Most of the time, deer move in EARLY morning and late in the evening, but they will occaisionally move during the middle of the day.  The main thing?  Just be still.  I have had countless amounts of deer walk around my stand and I didn't know it.  They saw me fidgeting and ran off.

    4.  A tip for putting up your stands:  don't just put up one.  If you go to the same stand day after day after day, the deer will pattern when you come in and when you leave. Once they do that, they can just come out when you're not there. Put up 3 or 4 stands and go to each of them regurally.  That way, the deer might know that you are in the area, but they will not know where you are going to be.

    5.  If you are hunting during the rut, I suggest putting out a decoy about 100 yards from your stand.  Use plenty of scent killer and even use some doe urine and things like that.  They will drive big bucks crazy.  You will also need a grunt call and rattling antlers.  The grunt call is very efective.  Last year, I called up a REALLY nice buck into one of my shooting lanes, using my grunt call.  However, beware.  Some bucks will be running and will not stop, no matter how much you call to them.

    6.  Most of all, have fun.  Take care of the meat once you shoot the deer, and I promise, you will love whitetail deer hunting.  I hope these tips help.  Also, pick up some hunting magazines.  Some good ones are:

    Field & Stream

    Deer & Deer Hunting

    Peterson's Hunting

Remember -  don't get stressed out!  Hunting can be a lot of work but it is very rewarding if you do it right ;)

  2. i suggest scents

  3. Bears. I suggest reading up on all the material you can find. Magazines are good to check out. Basically some things are, you need to eleminate human scent, be quiet for a long time, and hunt where animals actually live!

  4. Bring extra ammo more than you will ever need make a little survival kit also put matches (water proof if possible) something dry to burn, more ammo, a knife, a little food, extra pair of socks, Flash light, extra batteries, Etc. I know your saying I might not need all of this but if you shoot some thing and have to track it and get lost you will be thankful that you brought it. Tips I would say if you cant shoot really good practice is the key work on breathing. If you can then no problem. I would also buy a shock proof waterproof scope uncase you bump you scope or weather does not turn out so good. And if your going deep in the woods I would get a map and compass.

  5. ONE WORD: SCOUTING

Then a phrase: Know your game.

Some of us have spent a lifetime out in the woods learning by trial and error. Too bad, Al Gore didn't invent the internet 30 years ago and I could receive all this info without getting my feet wet.

Team up with hunters from different regions. Texas Desert tricks and techniques I learned as a younge hunter don't work in the Northern Maine woods. Snow camo would look funny in South Carolina or Georgia.
