  1. It's hard to match a .30-06 for versatility, and the recoil isn't bad in a rifle of medium weight. It has light bullets for varmints and can use accelerators. It also has heavy bullets for bigger game. Standard bullets are 110 to 220 grains. I'd use 110 and 125 for varmints; 150 or 180 for deer and black bear; and 220 for moose and grizzly.

  2. 7.62 is a good starting point, depending on the game you want to take.

7.62x39 good for close shots on deer and any small game.

7.62x51 (.308) some folks consider this the perfect cartridge. Any North American game animal can be taken with this cartridge.

7.62x54R The Russian equivalant of our .308, handloaders have some of the best hunting cartridges worked up for this caliber, also good for any North American game animal.

7.62x63 (30-06) is a souped up 308, virtually the same bullet weights, but all going faster than a 308, delivers more energy, travels a little farther, flatter, and usually penetrates deeper.

7.62 (30 caliber) hunting cartidges are at the top of their game, even the venerable 30-30 has taken more game animals than any other cartridge!

  3. 7.62x63 (also known as the 30-06)

    300 Win Mag

  4. If you want a varmint rifle and a big game rifle for wyoming all in the same package, you may want to look at a bolt action in a 243, 257roberts, or 25-06. A lot of people do that.

Of course when you get into those big game calibers, you might as well step up to a 270, 30-06, 7mag etc because you're not going to see the varmint get hit anyway due to recoil.

Due to the cost and pain, I'm not sure I want to shoot those at prarie dogs for any lenght of time. 22cal centerfire would be more appropriate for that...but then worthless for big game.

You could use the same loads or put quick release rings/mounts on and change your scopes. Buying the same brand bullet with the same lube will help keep your rifle shooting near their zeros (always good to check it though for big game)

  5. 30-06, 308, or 8mm Mauser.*
