I am getting ready for this year and next years fall hunting season. This year i have 1 white tail tag, 2 mule deer tags, and 1 bull moose tag. Next year i have a reservation for 2 caribou tags and i put my name in a draw for the bull moose tag. And a couple of coyote hunts both years.

My dad is letting me get a couple of guns, i already own the 22. lr and a 12 gauge shotgun. I was thinking of getting the 22-250 remington model 700. for the coyote. 270 win, or a 270wsm in the Tikka T3 Hunter or the Browning A-Bolt for the deer and a 30-378 weatherby mag. for the moose, im trying to get a bear tag too.

I know this is long sorry, but what do you think i should get? what do you think about my models? and what do you think about the calibres i picked?

  1. I think the best all around medium to large game rifle is the Browning A-Bolt Medallion in 300wsm.  I have one and a 150 grain Winchester power point bullet is perfect for whitetail.

When I hunt Elk and black Bear, or moose and caribou in your case, i use the 180 grain supreme elite with a ballistic tip.

  2. I suggest a .243 100 gr. for the deer and then an 80 gr. for coyotes.

  3. There seem to have been a lot of posts lately about 30-378. You should be aware that nobody really hunts with it. More is not always better, and increased velocity may even work against you, increasing the risk the bullet will blow up on the surface rather than penetrate for a clean kill. Plus, you just can't practice as much with the big bangers as you can with milder cartridges. Rather than keeping the caliber down and the speed up, it's generally a better idea to go up in bore size if you need more gun. If you really think you need more than 30-06, or one of the "normal magnums" in 30, I'd urge you to consider something in 33 or 35 caliber, or 9.3 mm, and not necessarily with "magnum" on the end.

270 should work fine for your other applications.

  4. A Barrett .50 Cal M82A1 should do you good.

    Only joking,your selections look good.

  5. if you want a caliber that can take anything in North America, id get .30-06. its not a fancy magnum and its been around for ever, but it will get the job done. you have lost of bullet weights to choose from, and you can even buy light magnums from Hornady. if you really want a magnum for moose, get .375 H&H Magnum. the weatherly magnums are nice, but the cartridges are expensive and there is always something just as good.

    A .270 and 30/06 should do it....

  7. I'd get a .270 (for deer, coyotes and smaller game) and then I'd get a .338 for larger game.

the .338 is a great all around big game caliber.

stick with that Tikka or perhaps a Kimber. If the Browning A-Bolt is way cheaper, then fine, go with it.

Put Leupold Vari-X III scopes on em and you're set.

  8. I'll go along with Tommy. The 30-06 is a great all round caliber, every body makes it, everybody and their uncle makes ammo for it. Everybody, their uncle and their niece sell it.

And it will do the job.

  9. Sounds like you have your rifles and calibers well lined up.  The .270 Winchester is like the perfect deer gun.  Just remember, the .22-250 is a varmint caliber and coyote is about the largest critter it is suitable for.  I'm not familiar with the .30-378 Weatherby but it sounds like it'll do ya.

    Happy hunting.

  10. All the guns you mentioned are great guns,I like the 25.06 for deer and yotes and the 375 H&H mag can't be beat for moose and big bear. I use both of these calibers for wild boar and bear hunting and have been very happy with them. Manufacturer is preference, I like Tikka, Ruger and Savage w/accu-trigger. check out http://www.bigdogoutdoors.com for more info...

  11. Get a tompson contender, and different barrels.

sweet , accurate gun , with many choices of calibers

  12. I personally don't think I would change any of your selections.

All are good guns and should give you the results you want as long as you get them in time to shoot a few rounds through them first.

    Good Luck with the hunts
